The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest known living fish in the world. The average size of an adult is about 32 feet (9.8 m) and 20,000 pounds (9 tons), making it a truly huge fish; and its mouth can be 4.9 feet (1.5 meters) wide and has between 300 and 350 rows of small teeth. However, they do not use their teeth for chewing as they are filter feeders; and while swimming, they simply open their mouths and take water and food into their mouths, then close their mouths and expel the water through their gills. They feed on plankton, including fish eggs, crab larvae, small squid, copepods, and krill. A young whale shark eats about 46 pounds (21 kg) of plankton per day. They are dark gray with a white belly and their 15 cm thick skin is uniquely marked with white or pale gray spots and stripes.
